TRANSASIA RED PACKET 2016

Commercial

Red packet, or “ang pao”, is a sign of fortune and wishes distributed by the elder to children and single people on the Chinese New Year. By giving the red packet they hope that everyone will start and end the year with good fortune and luck. “Ma Lau” is the Cantonese word for Monkey, of which this animal is also known for mischief. A person is sometimes referred to as a monkey for being mischievous.   From the Chinese point of view, the colour red is the commonly used on red packets as a symbol of prosperity and celebration. In contrast to traditional red packets that usually only use gold, red and yellow, the Monkey-themed red packets shown here are presented with a vibrant colour combination of maroon and aqua blue instead. An even interesting part of these red packets is the portrayal of a garden of monkeys swinging on trees, playing and eating – which is a symbol of happiness.
